The 1980s was a strong time for the FC St.Gallen 1879. Under its influential coach Helmuth Johannsen, the 1983-84 season brought European football for only the second time in the club's history. The goals of attacking trio Martin Gisinger, Paul Friberg and Manfred Braschler made St.Gallen an exciting team to watch and one that was virtually unbeatable at their home stadium, the Espenmoos.
