With manager Steve Perryman leaving the club on the eve of the 1990-91 season, his assistant Phil Holder stepped up to take charge and went on to enjoy a season of fine promise. This was a team built around the defensive rock that was Keith Millen with Keith Jones providing much stability in midfield. A hugely promising attack featuring Dean Holdsworth and Gary Blissett came together and helped take Brentford into the Third Division play-offs. Alas, a narrow defeat to Tranmere left promotion out of reach.
